The Story

While delivering newspapers to a nearby bank, I encountered an unexpected sight: even with an ATM available, a lengthy queue of individuals was waiting to withdraw cash from the tellers. Intrigued, I spoke with several people to inquire why they weren’t opting for the ATM. The responses were similar—they didn’t know how to operate it.

Intrigued, I spoke with several people to inquire why they weren’t opting for the ATM. The responses were similar—they didn’t know how to operate it.

Observation

This observation prompted me to dig deeper. I learned that the main problem was the absence of clear visual instructions on the ATM. Many individuals, particularly those who were not tech-savvy, found the interface perplexing. Standard ATMs missed intuitive design features that could easily assist users.

The Solution

To address this issue, I suggested a new approach: integrating icon-based visual cues on ATM screens. By incorporating straightforward, recognizable icons akin to those on smartphones, my goal was to enhance the ATM interface, making it more user-friendly and instinctual. This change would enable users to quickly grasp how to use the machine without needing detailed instructions.
